They made Jesus Camp the movie. What Next?
I might have just seen the most riveting video ever. If you want to make a movie trailer-- take some hints from these people:
A few things about the concept of a camp about Jesus: For me, the closest I have probably come to this sort of thing is Vacation Bible School. My first VBS ever was in Delhi, India. My only memory from that experience was punching a kid in the stomach and making him cry. I have since repented and moved on. Watching the video, you have to keep an open mind not just about the subjects of the film but also the film makers themselves. To set the stage, two people: Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady follow three young people along with their parents to a "Kids on Fire" camp run by a pastor named Becky Fischer. I am unsure if the two film makers had any agendas other than just to present the camp to the world. The film is called Jesus Camp and you can find their main website here. The movie looks good from the preview and I intend on watching it when it comes out.
What you'll find even more interesting, fellow Dippu-ers, is that our local Indian church here in Portland held their VBS a couple of years back. Our theme was "Boot Camp": very similar in that we were preparing young kids to become soldiers for God. "I'm in the Lord's Army, yes SIR!" sort of stuff. This camp looks like a pretty elaborate setup with face paint, body worship, skits, and impressive young kids. I was really impressed by the young kid on the mike who is absolutely passionate about what he's saying. My only fear is that many non-Christians might see these people and think that we believe our enemies are actual human beings rather than sin and Satan himself. Before you get that unsettling feeling in your gut that I got watching the video first, consider if non Christian film makers brought a camera to a Malayalee Pentecostal gathering? Why is it that this hasn't happened yet? Are they not the most intriguing group one can find in the United States? I'm waiting for "Kathiripu Yogam the Movie" but until then this seems like a good choice.
A little late but...
Ok, so it's wayyy late. But these past two weeks, the theme has just hung around in the air: LOVE. And I'm sure there are readers out there who are criticizing us because we do not have signifcant others and because of the fact that we are males, and thus we can only speak from our perspective. That's why I got the help of a wonderful friend of mine (who shall remain anonymous) and had her write about her concept of love. And without much further ado, here is Niela's view on love.

There is no really definition of love, but each person has his or her own idea of what love really is. Love is such an over used term that no one really thinks about it before they say it. I guess I was like that too, I would use love to say maybe I like you or that I love because I want you to love me too. But it wasn’t till yesterday that I really thought about the word love.
Love is strong; love can strengthen or defile a relationship. I say I love you to my boyfriend all the time, but what does that mean to me? Do I love him because he’s always there or that I enjoy spending time with him or because he’s so cute? No, it is not any of that. I love him because I choose to love. I realized that love isn’t about me, it is not for me to be satisfied, but it is about the satisfaction of the one I love. I can not expect anything in return for what I give him. I love him knowing that I won’t maybe get anything for myself. When I say that I love him there is no other self motives behind it. I freely offer my love without thinking how it can affect me.
As a Christian, I realized the love that Christ had for me; He freely gave himself for me without realizing the pain that He might go through. Love is selfless; love is knowing that it is all or nothing. You can’t half heartedly give your love to someone, then that love becomes incomplete and it is not pure. Just as Christ gave Himself completely to us, we are saved from this wretched world. When you love someone completely it also changes who they really are. The best feeling in the world is knowing that someone loves you. Why not give that love to someone else? Why not for once we all just forget about ourselves and just give?
Love comes in all shapes, sizes, and forms… just like people. Express your love in a humble, selfless way and see where it can lead your life and the life of your loved ones. The word love is special and scared but everyone has the ability to love and to be loved. As we are celebrating Valentine’s Day, think about what love means to you and how you can give more of yourselves to others, in order that they can feel and be influenced by your love. Remember, your kind of love can only come from you, it is different from everyone else’s and there is someone that needs the specific love that you have, to touch their life.
I am changed because of the love that I receive, it made me a better person, and accepting person, a sincere person.
What is love? Love is generous, love is time, love is listening, love is accepting, love is talking, love is smiling, love is letting, love is not me, love is you…
